Croydon Harriers Young Athletes made club history on Sunday, when they became the club’s first mixed team to reach a major cup final placing a high scoring second in their last match in the UKA Young Athletes Campaign at the Albert Road Arena. An especially appropriate achievement in the club’s 90th Anniversary Year

With points at a premium, the Croydon Arena buzzed with activity as the Harriers boys and girls, including several making their debuts, pulled out all the stops performing superbly to score up a safe total between Blackheath and Bromley and Woodford Green and Essex Ladies.

They are now excitedly looking forward to the UKA South of England Final at Hendon on Sunday August 1st.

U15 captain Patrick Lucas ran a beautifully controlled 1500m to win in 4:32.62 and Marvin Burke peaked with a high jump victory and a PB of 1.60m.Talented first year U15 Joshua Haasz excelled too in both, with quality seconds, clocking 4:45.36 and clearing 1.55m helping the club to maximum points... Together with double track winner Femi Agbetoyin 400m and 800m, who looked invincible in both, finishing well clear in 53.11sec and 2;12.28, they formed the perfect 4x400m team too, which won in

U15 Shirin Irving stood out in more ways than one with a superb hat trick of wins. She took the 75m hurdles in 11.64sec, the long jump at 5.43m and the shot at 9.26m and rounded off with scorching third leg in the relay... Another dominant hurdler was U13 Taylor Campbell who finished almost half a second ahead in her 70m hurdles race in.

U13 sprinter Nathan Best lived up to his name with clear wins in the 100m 200m and shot with high quality performances of 12.22sec, 26.02sec and 10.59m.
U17 Josh Atille added a good 400m 3rd to a very impressive sprint double in which he fractionally headed team mate Cameron Smith in the 100m, 11.53sec to 11.58sec into a -2.8m/s wind, and 23.20sec to 23.27sec.in the 200I.
Ace hurdler Joe Yarde put in two crisp winning runs over clocking 13.78sec for the 100m and 60.45sec for the 400m.

Yet again Peter Chambers put his stamp of quality on the U17 800m 2:03.08 and 1500m 4:21.09 with powerful wins and ambitious Mark Placket broke new ground in the 1500m s/c with a winning time and PB of 4:46.65.

The Croydon relay teams shone too, with a club record, four wins and two seconds. The record encouragingly went to the youngest team, the U13 4x400m girls foursome of Ashleigh Clark, Akua Agyeman, Irene Afrije and Cheyanne Evans . They romped home triumphant in 54.35sec to erase the previous best which had stood since 1980. Thrower Faraz Rafi and jumper Sheldon Brown both showed admirable spirit and considerable promise with their U17 4x400m contributions.

It was a truly great day for the club !

On Sunday the Harrier boys travel to Walton on Thames for the final match in the Ebbisham League series and will be aiming for the title.
